"One for Hell" by Jada M. Davis

When it came, out of the dark, he didn't know what had happened. Not at first. One second he was walking along--and then the world caved in. He was on his back, looking at stars. The right side of his face felt numb, crushed, broken.

Just finished this book, a Stark House noir classic by Jada M. Davis. One reviewer called it "dark, raw and ugly, even shocking--but dangerously good."... Agreed, for the most part. Originally published in 1952 and set in a corrupt Texas oil town, it drips with atmosphere, the characters and plot strong, the writing solid. This one's about as dark as you get. Which warms my heart. Good stuff.
